When to Send a Legal Notice in Chennai (and What It Should Say)

2 May 2026 6 min read

A legal notice is a formal written demand sent before initiating court proceedings. In Chennai's commercial environment, well-drafted notices often resolve 60%+ of disputes without litigation.

Common scenarios: unpaid invoices, cheque bounce (S.138 NI Act), breach of contract, employment dues, defective goods, trademark/copyright infringement, and consumer complaints.

Mandatory format: sender details, recipient details, full statement of facts, legal grounds, specific demand, and a timeline (typically 15–30 days) to comply.

For cheque bounce, the notice MUST be sent within 30 days of the bank memo, and the complaint must be filed within 15 days after the notice period.

Send via registered post AD (acknowledgement due) and keep a courier receipt. Email and WhatsApp delivery is admissible but registered post is the gold standard.

Our litigation team drafts, dispatches and tracks notices for Chennai businesses — and represents you in court if compliance doesn't follow.
