The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit identifier issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce, and is mandatory for any business or individual importing or exporting goods (and most services) from India. Frequently Asked Questions
Is IEC mandatory for service exports?
Not for most freelance / IT services (paid via SOFTEX / FIRC), but mandatory if you wish to claim service export benefits or RoDTEP. We recommend obtaining IEC for any cross-border business.
Can individuals obtain an IEC?
Yes. PAN is the basis of IEC — individuals, proprietors, LLPs, companies and trusts can all apply with their PAN.
What is the validity of IEC?
Lifetime — but annual confirmation/update on the DGFT portal between April and June is mandatory, failing which the IEC is deactivated.
Can one PAN have multiple IECs?
No. One PAN = one IEC. For multiple branches, the same IEC is used across all locations.
Is IEC required for import via courier?
Required for commercial shipments. Personal-use samples under ₹50,000 may be exempt under courier rules — we'll guide you.
