IEC is a 10-digit code issued by DGFT under the Ministry of Commerce. It is mandatory for clearing customs, sending/receiving foreign payments and availing export incentives.

When IEC is NOT required: import/export by individuals for personal use, or services with no foreign exchange involvement.

Documents: PAN of business, Aadhaar of proprietor/director, address proof, bank certificate or cancelled cheque, and digital photograph.

Process: file IEC application online on the DGFT portal. IEC is typically issued within 1–3 working days. Annual update is mandatory — non-updated IECs are deactivated.

Chennai's port and SEZs (Mahindra World City, MEPZ) make IEC essential for any Tamil Nadu exporter targeting Sri Lanka, Singapore or the Middle East.
